Artist Statement

Jordan-Peter Moses

Artist Statement

When I create my work I try to go into a positive frame of mind. What do I mean by this? I believe that anything an individual does in life is generated through hard work and motivation from different influences that may have occurred in an individual’s life. The great Michelangelo, Leonardo de Vinci and even Pele are all individuals that I believe produced greatness in their lives and found some sort of influence to help them to become successful.
For me, I generate motivation from my passion for soccer and different experiences that I have been through in my life. Such as, watching my mother battle through cancer, different experiences with sports and most importantly the fact that I have a learning disability called dyslexia. I have seeing a number of individuals with the same learning disability try to use it as an excuse. However, I completely disagree it should drive you to work harder to prove to people that it might take you a little longer but you can still produce exceptional work.
Furthermore, I try to create most of my art works from my real life experience. In my three typography projects I experimented with words that are related to soccer. It explains the instructions on how to kick a soccer ball. I also created a sculpture that was influenced by soccer, which shows how frustrated I can get with my love for the sport. The sculpture shows my two hands tied together with a rope, which has a soccer ball on the other end.

My Book

Concept Statement

Project three presented the most research and most time consuming of the previous projects. This was a challenge that I was willing to work hard at and try to produce a successful project. That being said, I went through a number of steps in creating my end product. My first step was to create a number of different designs with the symbol that I choose from the last project. And decide on the type of company I would create.
I decided to create a security company called After Dark Security. The colors that were used were dark blue and gold, which represent security and number one in the industry. After I was satisfied with the logo design I started to put together three different grid structures and come up with my book layout and size.
I then incorporated the grids into my book layout and started to add text to my spreads. Furthermore, I wanted to create a book that would explain my nine symbols but I wanted to take it a step further and explain each process by showing my sketches of the different steps I took in order to create each design.
Creating this book was a challenge because I wanted to create a clean and professional layout. However, I noticed that my book was very simple and didn’t show any character. This led me to recreating certain elements of my book and incorporating color, which helped to create cohesiveness and rhythm. The colors through out the book were the same to create balance and to help create a sense of security and reliability to its viewers. This is also seeing in the color of my book cover with the spine of the book being gold and the rest dark blue.
As it relates to the creation of the book, I must give thanks to Professor Furrup for her assistance with putting together my book. It was a lengthy process but one that was well worth the time. It is easy for someone to get a book made for him or her but to actually create a book on my own was a great learning experience.  In the end I felt a sense of accomplishment and hard work, which is what life is all about.

Typography Project

This project was a Typography project that consisted of 6 different design layouts. Such as, Proximity, Weight, Size, Weight and Size, Color and Punctuation.

Throughout this project I went through a number of different steps that paid off in the end. These steps proved to be a huge part of my final project. I decided to come up with a number of steps that a person should take if they want to kick a soccer ball with power. After doing my research on the topic soccer and kicking the ball, I came up with a grid structure that I would create my designs around.
This was my first experience with this grid method and after I learnt some of the different ways of creating the grids it quickly became a technique that I appreciated. The grid system helped me to come up with different layouts for each sections of my project, which was much better than creating my designs from a plain white piece of paper. Furthermore, I wanted to get the right typeface for each of my designs. After going through the list of fonts that we had to choose from for each of my designs, I was determined to find the right font that was most suitable for each design. Readability played a huge part in my design as it relates to certain fonts and their size and positioning.
Finally, color and punctuation was key in my final two designs. Due to the fact that my topic was related to a sport, I had to create a fun and vibrant feel to my design. I created my work with energetic colors and a look of a soccer field for my visual punctuation. Reason being, I wanted both compositions to grab my viewers attention.
